Another Great Trip in Columbia, the Capital of South Carolina

Posted by SCBeachTrips.com on Wednesday, January 21, 2015,
There was a Beer Fest in Columbia, SC over the weekend so we did a 2 day trip in Columbia, SC. In the past, I've only done single day trips so this was our first time staying overnight and we got to do some more exploring this time around. I am so impressed at how much Columbia is remodeling in downtown and all the businesses seem to be booming, even in the middle of January. Maybe it's because of the beer fest that attracted a lot of tourists/visitors this past weekend but still, I see a pro...

Secret Atom Bomb Dropped in Florence, SC

Posted by SCBeachTrips.com on Sunday, December 7, 2014,
One of the few fortunate things that I was able to see for myself is the site where the bomb was dropped by the air force. Not a lot of people know about it because there was an article that said that they wanted to keep it a secret. Although the site is somewhat preserved for its history, there is a chance in the future that that site could be replaced with housing. Here are the pictures I took of the site and the bulletin board that someone put there about the history.

Jennifer's Taqueria at Florence Flea Market in South Carolina is awesome

Posted by SCBeachTrips.com on Sunday, December 7, 2014, In : Food
The best Mexican food I've ever had in Florence, SC is at the Flea Market at a little place called Jennifer's Taqueria. Don't be deceived by its little shack. Their tacos are phenomenal with all the right fixings! Make sure you bring cash because that is all they take. My favorites are the carne asada and chicken tacos. They all come with a piece of avocado. Make sure you put some of their hot sauce on it. It's so good and authentic!

Snow Day in Florence, South Carolina - January 29, 2014

Posted by SCbeachTrips.com on Wednesday, January 29, 2014,
It rarely snows in Florence, SC but last night it did. The weather channel was accurate in their predictions and all the schools and most of the businesses are also closed for today. Most residents are staying inside.

Since it usually only snows once a year around here (if we're lucky), most of us really appreciate it. Of course, it makes driving a lot more dangerous but as long as we know to stay indoors before the sleet starts, we should be okay. My husband didn't work today so we played in...

Golden Dragon is a good deal but food is really sweet

Posted by SCBeachTrips.com on Sunday, January 12, 2014, In : Food
I like Chinese food but I feel like the Chinese food restaurants around Florence, SC are all overly sweet for my taste. A lot of the dishes are filled with a lot of sweet sauces that make it really overbearing for my palette. Golden Dragon is one of them. I really like how they have the twin dragons in the front and when you come inside of the restaurant, it definitely has a Chinese theme inside.

Besides for the appropriate decor, another great thing about this place is they let you order ...

Fleet Landing is a great place for seafood in Charleston that is waterfront

Posted by SCbeachtrips.com on Thursday, November 21, 2013, In : Charleston
We were recommended by a couple who lived locally to dine at Fleet Landing for seafood after a romantic sailing trip. We got there around 5:30pm on a Saturday night and it was busy. There was a 20 minute wait to eat inside but no wait to eat on the patio, which is a great option if you have a coat in hand. The patio is right on the water front and you can hear the waves crashing and the moon shining while you have your dinner. My husband ordered the fried flounder with apricot glaze and I ord...

2 hour sailing trip review for Adventures in Sailing (Mount Pleasant, Charleston)

Posted by SCbeachtrips.com on Monday, November 18, 2013, In : Charleston

For our first year wedding anniversary, I surprised my husband to a voucher for 2 on a two hour sailing trip with Adventures in Sailing around Mount Pleasant and Charleston, SC. I found out about them from a TravelZoo promotion. It was a nice, relaxing time. I really like the fact that it's BYOB so we were able to bring our beverage of choice with us. We also brought some snacks to munch on. We thought 2 hours was going to breeze by really fast but it was ample time. We were the first group o...

Free things for Veteran's Day if you're in the military or a veteran

Posted by SCBeachtrips.com on Monday, November 11, 2013, In : Free Things to do
Happy Veteran's Day!

My husband is a Navy veteran and today is Veteran's Day. We discovered quickly upon moving to South Carolina that residents here really appreciate a military man and any veteran who has served the country. We really appreciate the freebies he gets on Veteran's Day. We know of several businesses/franchises around the US that routinely offer freebies every year so here is a list that we know of.

Free on Veteran's Day ONLY

Long Grain Cafe recently opened in 2013 and we are impressed with what the food has to offer. The ingredients are fresh and the place is clean. Not only that, they serve a fusion of real all American and Asian dishes. Their breakfast is truly the best in the area!

Don't forget to check out their fountain towards the back of the restaurant. Their address is 260 W Palmetto St, Florence, SC 29501

SIMT is a beautiful building with more fountains to see. It was a cloudy day when I took this picture but imagine it on a beautiful day!

Shogun Japanese Steakhouse is a great place for hot Japanese Food in Florence

Posted by SCBeachTrips.com on Thursday, July 18, 2013, In : Food

I've been to Miyami a couple of times and I was never impressed. I'm so glad we discovered Shogun Japanese Steakhouse because the food taste and quality of the food is so much better! It's kind of a small, underrated place. After talking to the waitress, I realized this place has been opened for many years before Miyami.

It's a Japanese restaurant but they are owned by Vietnamese owners. The flavors are amazing. Here is a picture of my plate and the experience. Hands down, Shogun Japanese Ste...

Pretty fountain at Florence Darlington Technical College (FDTC)

Posted by SCbeachtrips.com on Saturday, July 6, 2013,
If you read an older blog post of mine, you already know that I've been thinking about starting school at FDTC for this fall. After getting accepted into the school, I decided to go get my ID before it gets too busy so I drove to the main campus and walked to the Student Services building. I was very glad to have walked by the fountain on my way there. It made the place so tranquil and welcoming. I can picture myself sitting here often with my lunch.

Dog Park in Florence, SC (David H McLeod Park) is a great place for your dogs

Posted by SCBeachtrips.com on Thursday, May 30, 2013,
There is a fenced dog park at David H McLeod Park located at:
620 S Santiago Dr
Florence, SC 29501

This dog park at David H Mcleod Park has a really nice tranquil pond. Just a slight hover over the water and you'll see dozens of fishes. They don't have a water fountain but my dog really likes to drink out of the pond water. He's been there 3 times now and hasn't had a stomachache from it. (see pictures below)

Visitors aren't allowed to fish here anymore so that's great news for the dogs. Another ...

My favorite restaurant in Virginia Beach is Rudee's on the Inlet Restaurant (right next to the water)

My husband grew up in Virginia Beach, VA so he took me to Rudee's on the Inlet Restaurant for some seafood when we were in town an it is so amazing and romantic! We sat in one of their swinging cabanas and that itself was a unique experience. The service was great, even though they were so busy on a beautiful day. I ordered a berry mojito and my husband ordered a beer. For lunch, we ordered a lobster roll and a seafood platter that had scallops, shrimp, lobster and crab meat. I forgot the exa...

My favorite Chinese restaurant in Florence, SC is Jin Jin on Palmetto

Posted by Master Pet on Monday, April 8, 2013,
I really like Chinese food and sometimes after having it so much, I become very picky about my food like I don't like a lot of onions in my fried rice.

I can always rely on Jin Jin for good Chinese food. Their prices are inexpensive and the shrimp in your entrees are huge! The flavors are amazing and I will go to Jin Jin over buffets any day. Look at what I got below today! All of this for under $13. It's amazing. Their portions are huge.

We were visiting Myrtle Beach for a day and wanted good Thai food in the area. We dined at Bangkok House that is located  at: 318 N Kings Hwy Myrtle Beach, SC 29577. We were there right when it opened at 11AM, a perfect time for their lunch specials. They were very affordable and there was nothing over 7 dollars on the lunch special menu, which includes your choice of entree, spring roll and soup! The owners are very nice and personable. I ordered the today's special which included a steak, a side and a salad for 18.99. See picture below. It's near the mall and you'll see a lot of business workers coming here at lunch or for dinner. Disappointed with Little China Restaurant in Florence, SC

Posted by SCBeachTrips.com on Thursday, March 28, 2013,
Usually it takes at least 3 strikes for me to give a restaurant a bad review. This was our first time trying their Chinese food and what got us to drive to 2nd Loop for this is because we saw online that they have a very inexpensive lunch menu.

First strike took place when they gave me the wrong thing. Soup or egg roll comes as a choice for your lunch entree as it said on the menu. I told the guy who took my order for egg drop soup but he gave me an egg roll instead. Maybe he heard me wrong b...

Chutnee Indian Restaurant pleases the taste buds - Florence, SC

Posted by SCBeachTrips.com on Thursday, March 28, 2013, In : Food
We went to Chutnee (located on Palmetto St) for the first time yesterday and apparently they just re-opened with a new owner in March 2013. We really liked the service and they give you this free taco shell with every entree. I've always find Indian food very fascinating as a lot of spices go into play for just one dish. However, my stomach can't take Indian food well because of the acidic flavors but once in a while, it is a great treat for me. My husband and I ordered the Chicken Tikka, Lam...

Pho Vietnam suffices for the Pho crave - Florence, SC - THIS LOCATION IS NOW CLOSED

Posted by SCBeachTrips.com on Thursday, March 28, 2013, In : Food
2017 UPDATE: This Pho Vietnam restaurant in Florence, SC is now closed! Review below is an old post.

Pho Vietnam just opened up in Florence, SC for about 2 weeks now and we're impressed with the pho broth. We were expecting something mediocre since it's the monopoly for Vietnamese food as the only Vietnamese restaurant in Florence, SC. With only 18 food items on the menu, it is limited but suffices for the Vietnamese cravings one would have every once in a while. Located on 205B Second Loop Rd...

Southern Hospitality in Florence, SC

I've noticed that for every week in the last month, I've made a trip to the local post office. I like knowing that my mail has reached the post office because it saves the mailman a step and do enjoy my trips here.

Today, there was a line to get to the desk for help at the South Florence post office. When it was my turn, a lady behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said I dropped some money and handed $2 to me. I was taken my surprise and I'm glad she was so honest about it. She could've wai...

Kalmia Gardens is a great place to clear your mind (free to public and dog friendly) in Hartsville, SC

We came here to visit over the weekend and were thrilled that we've found a garden where we can have some peaceful walks with our dog. Here are some pictures from our walk through the gardens.

Midnight Rooster is a great spot for coffee and food in historic Hartsville, SC

When your neighbor is shooting squirrels across the street

I look out the window and it's our neighbor shooting at squirrels on a tree right across the street. I was very appalled because I never see this in San Diego. This is just one more thing I'll need to get used to.
